Enhanced descriptions from Syndetics:

In the words of Walt Disney, "Animation can explain whatever the mind of man can conceive." Part biography, part history, part artistic commentary, this volume looks at major figures in the field of animation and discusses how their contributions have affected the course of the industry--and, in many cases, popular culture as a whole. These gifted artists are divided into several classifications: Idealists (Art Babbitt, John Hubley); Mavericks (John Kricfalusi, Terry Gilliam); Technicians (Max and Dave Fleischer); Influencers (Frank Tashlin, Matt Groening, Ray Harryhausen, Ed Benedict); Trailblazers (Lotte Rieniger, Lillian Friedman); Teller of Tales (Henry Selick); Teachers (George Newall, Tom Yohe, the FMPU); and Storytellers (Joe Grant, Bill Scott, Michael Maltese). A selective list of each animator's key films and awards is included.

Includes bibliographical references (pages 207-211) and index.

CHOICE Review

The lens through which playwright and animation historian Wolfgram Evans tells the story of animators is what allows this work to add value to the already vast selection of information sources on animation and animators. Divided into categories like "Idealists," "Trailblazers," and "Storytellers," the chapters for the artists or groups are more than biographies or histories. Each is a vignette that tells the story of how the subject's creations changed the medium of animation and influenced society and culture. Each well-written chapter stands alone as a study of an artist or group of artists. However, this is not a reference book; it is intended to be read as a whole. Within the framework of the organizational categories, the entire work presents a cohesive narrative. It threads together meaningful individual achievements in a manner that allows readers to understand the interconnections and influence of these artists, writers, producers, and other contributors within the context of animation. This book would be a fantastic addition to collections supporting animation enthusiasts, and students and researchers interested in history, popular culture, and film/media studies. Summing Up: Highly recommended. Lower- and upper-level undergraduates; general readers. R. J. Krajewski Simmons College
