Markides (London Business School; All the Right Moves, CH, Jul'00, 37-6351), a highly respected expert in the field of strategy and innovation, discusses how companies can proactively and successfully introduce radical new business models while concurrently growing existing businesses. He uses the phrase "game-changing strategy" to describe ways to increase business growth and profitability in new and different ways. Markides differentiates business model innovation from product and technological innovation. The book includes many practical real-world applications of game-changing strategies from such well-known companies as Starbucks, IKEA, Southwest Airlines, Nucor, and Dell as well as 20 lesser-known business model innovators, e.g., Kingfisher Airlines, CavinKare, easyCar, and MinuteClinic. Although the topic is complex, the book is written in a clear, understandable style, and Markides incorporates numerous tables and figures to further clarify concepts and examples. Appendixes include useful information about ways to enhance corporate creativity and methods to measure relatedness between current markets and new markets. Constantinos Markides is professor of Strategic and International Management and holds the Robert P. Bauman Chair of Strategic Leadership at the London Business School. He is also the chairman of the Strategic and International Management (SIM) Department at LBS.
